Deck Maintenance Checklist

  1. Check for rot & decay - Look over your deck thoroughly. Are there any obvious signs of rot? You can use a screwdriver and attempt to poke through the wood (you should not be able to).
  2. Check the integrity of stairs, railings, & fasteners - Are the railings wobbly? The stairs a bit loose? You do not want to leave these issues unattended.
  3. Clean thoroughly - Regular sweepings can keep debris from piling up and creating more issues. A good power washing once a year is always recommended.
  4. Stain & seal - For wood decks specifically, this includes sanding, staining & sealing. It is crucial for prevention of rot & decay, while offering water-resistance.
