With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, home contractors have been left in a unique situation. As part of the “New York State on PAUSE” order issued by Governor Andrew Cuomo, construction services are considered “essential” and are therefore allowed to continue operations; however, our work has been limited to “essential infrastructure or for emergency repair and safety purposes.” What does this mean for home renovations and construction projects?
Since construction can continue, remodeling and renovations can theoretically continue as normal, though individual projects should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Many upcoming remodeling and renovation projects have been postponed across the country in order to continue practicing social distancing. Other ongoing projects should be completed in order to keep the property safe and functional. This can create difficulties as it becomes more and more important to remain separate from other people in order to combat the spread of disease.
What Measures Can Be Taken?
In the face of the pandemic, any possible safety precautions should be observed while on the job. While it is more difficult for construction and renovation workers to practice social distancing, there are measures you can take, such as staggering shifts and taking breaks separately. If you must share tools, sanitation is paramount. Be careful to sneeze or cough into your elbow and do not come to work if you feel sick. Take your cue from measures that other crew members are taking. In some instances, workers have their temperatures taken before they enter job sites.
What You Can Do
The most important thing right now is to remain calm and focus on doing what you can to remain healthy. It can be frustrating not to feel in control of the situation; however, the only way to combat the virus right now is to stop it from spreading. Because construction work is essential, the work of home contractors can, if necessary, continue on. However, postpone jobs where you can and make sure your employees stay home if they are not feeling well. The most important thing to do is to take every precaution you can and stay healthy. There is every reason to expect that home remodeling, construction, and renovation services will be in high demand once the worst of the virus has passed. The faster we can stop the spread of COVID-19, the sooner everything can return to normal.
